The name she uses for her middle name "Chrishell" is a portmanteau word created in response to the unique circumstances of her birth when her mother went into labor at the Shell station, and the attendant who was named Chris was able to deliver the child. In her book, Strause does not deny the gossip surrounding her birth. She said that her mother was having car problems and pulled into a gas station. In the midst of waiting in the gas station, she went into pre-labor and was assisted by the car attendant who helped her get to the hospital. Strause was born at an in-hospital. Prior to finding out that she was pregnant her mother divorced her from her father. He was half Japanese half Spanish. Jeff is her stepfather. Chrishell Strause missed a full year of middle school because she was confined in tent. Strause remembered washing her hair in a river using food stamps, and hiding her real identity from her peers. Her parents "struggled with mental and addiction health" and she joined the Worldwide Church of God when she was 10 years old. Strause says her mother was having a self-righteous and free spirit. Her mother didn't have an occupation that was steady.
